The Mokai Patea Services logo was conceived and designed by Isaiah Matana, who has Ngati Whitikaupeka, Ngati Kuri, Tuwharetoa and Te Iwi Morehu whakapapa. He was educated at Moawhango School and graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts & Design at Eastern Institute of Technology in Napier.
The concept that he created and was adopted as the Nga Iwi O Mokai Patea Services Trust logo is made up of 4 main components. These are;
The tail of Pohokura (one of the “Kaitiaki” of the rohe), the four stylized designs that adorn Pohokura’s tail have been taken from wharenui of marae within the rohe. The third component is made up of the curvaceous stems that protrude from the tail of Pohokura. These are a direct reference to flax strips that are used to weave, (this was included in the design to integrate elements of the previous Otaihape Maori Komiti logo into the new contemporary logo created for Mokai Patea Services. The last component is the coloured overlapping areas of the stylized weave which resembles the shape of the Patiki (the flounder which is another kaitiaki of the rohe)
Overall Isaiah’s contemporary design has encapsulated the past, present & future; embraced and celebrated change and provided us with an uplifting and energetic image that retains a strong reference to the tangata and whenua of Mokai Patea.
